Music Therapy and Literacy: A Great Team!

In returning from a local bookstore's annual sale over the weekend, I was struck by how many unique children's books there are nowadays. However, not too many (that I saw) were specifically created as storybooks for music therapy and music education. If you're in the field, you're fairly up on what's new, but for those just starting out, or any interested parents, here are a few standards, and some new finds.

Pete the Cat and His New White Shoes by Eric Litwin.

What makes it great-The original Creator of Pete the Cat, Eric Litwin, crafted a simple, and fun story complete with a blues style song accompaniment found for free on the publisher's website. Other great PETE THE CAT books include Pete The Cat And His Magic Sunglasses, a great one to address different feelings.

What Do You Do With A Problem? By Kobi Yamada

Kobi Yamada's beautifully illustrated book is perfect for launching discussions, and role playing different outcomes of actions. He also wrote What Do You Do With A Chance? and What Do You Do With An Idea?

Every Little Thing by Cedella Marley

Based on the infectious tune "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley, this adorable kids book has slightly altered lyrics from the original song, but tells the story of a little boy who encounters problems and realizes that there's nothing to worry about because with help from others, everything will be alright.

Good Morning Yoga and Good Night Yoga by Miriam Gates

Full disclosure: I have yet to purchase these, but can't wait! Yoga, or even movement to music is proven to be so beneficial and these books can be a great addition to any therapist's collection.
